We hope you will join us during the week of 8/4 to 8/8 to help prevent more nuclear weapons victims -- work with us if you have any availability!

Our most recent previous letter -- now so long ago -- to this New-Mexico-oriented subset of our main mailing list: Looking for two half-time Santa Fe based outreach staff to help build opposition to a new nuclear arms race, Apr 11, 2025.

Why so long? Most of the time it's best to write to our whole mailing list, and/or to the news media. At the same time we don't want to slight in any way the importance of resistance to the new nuclear arms race in New Mexico. Here, where many of us live, we can do what is not possible elsewhere. 

Dear friends --

First of all, we are deeply grateful for and humbled by your support, expressed in so many ways over the years, including recently.

Next, we hope you have taken note of the call to action in our recent Bulletin ("Please work with us during Hiroshima-Nagasaki week"):

For a number of reasons, we think the best way to honor the Hiroshima and Nagasaki victims and prevent more of them is to double and triple down on building opposition to making more nuclear weapons right here in our region...

[W]e crave your help, preferably your in-person help, during the week of 8/4- 8/8, to recruit further public opposition to this factory.

We will have work going on in Albuquerque here at our offices, in Santa Fe, and possibly also in Taos. There will be work happening elsewhere as well, but for reasons of morale, mutual education, and administrative simplicity we'd like people to be physically present at least once or twice during the week, if possible.

You don't have to help for the whole week to be very helpful, because as we never tire of saying, you have contacts we don't.

Third, and the other main reason we are sending this letter, are two fine op-eds recently published in the Santa Fe New Mexican. You might not have seen them and they deserve wider distribution, especially to activist leaders and others interested in nuclear disarmament and peace.

One, written by Jean Nichols, was published yesterday: "It's past time for an energized peace movement." That link goes to an archived copy on our web site of what Jean said, along with a commentary by me (Greg). The two short essays are complementary and we urge you to read them both -- and forward them widely.

The other excellent op-ed of note was written by Dee Homans and published on July 19 under this title "On this 80th anniversary, consider a non-nuclear future."

As a reminder, op-eds and letters-to-editors influence not only readers but also editors and subsequent reportage. Write them if you can!

Our plans for the Hiroshima-Nagasaki week are beginning to gel as folks step forward. Please do write us if you can help at all.
