Dear friends --

First, please join us on Monday, August 19, at the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice (202 Harvard SE, map) to discuss the question of whether the 2024 elections are likely to alter the course of the new nuclear arms race -- and the U.S.-supported wars in Europe and the Middle East.

Would a new face in the White House make a difference, and if so how? How is government actually functioning on these issues? What can we expect during the next administration on these issues? And meanwhile, what can we do? (Hint: plenty!).

We are looking forward to a terrific discussion this coming Monday. Please join us!

By the way, we had an excellent discussion on these same topics on August 6. We have slightly edited and extended some of the slides we used and posted them here.

Second, one powerful thing that any of us can do to help is to recruit organizations and businesses (and individuals!) to endorse the Call for Sanity, Not Nuclear Production.

It is because of the outreach some of you have been doing that plutonium warhead core ("pit") production is now a major issue at every public meeting NNSA has held in the past year. Our collective voice is growing stronger with each endorsement, and with every conversation you have. Many people, businesses, and organizations want to help stop the bomb factory. They just need to be asked.

"We" -- especially some of us in New Mexico -- have managed to keep the U.S. from building a new facility for pit production for 30 years. This is causing an enormous amount of hand-wringing in nuclear circles. For nuclear hawks, those 30 years can never be recovered. They are in a bad place, and they know it. Now, given the perilous state of the U.S. economy and society, we believe any U.S. attempt to conduct an arms race will fail.

With your help, we at the Los Alamos Study Group have won in the past, decisively, and we now need to consolidate those past victories -- gifts from those who resisted before, of whom many are in poor health today or have died. We can win again today, for what turn out to be very concrete reasons they cannot BS away, no matter how much money they have. In fact we are winning -- if we just carry through. Our greatest adversary is the belief that we are helpless and weak.

Best wishes,

Greg
